About

User Analytics plays a critical role in the UX design process, transforming assumptions about product usage into actionable insights. By integrating data collection methods such as surveys, usability tests, and focus groups with robust analytics tools, we gain a comprehensive understanding of user interactions, enabling informed decision-making. In my recent leadership roles, I emphasized the importance of gathering user data to enhance our product offerings. I utilized a variety of analytics tools, including WalkMe, Pendo, Google Analytics, and Mixed Panel, with a particular focus on data derived from Pendo.

Feature Usage Tracking

One of the key metrics monitored is feature usage, especially for newly released functionalities. By tracking feature adoption percentages over time, you are able to identify which user roles adopt new features more quickly. Additionally, understanding which features are most frequently used by different roles informs our release planning and prioritization.

Informed Decision Making

Often, people operate on assumptions regarding user behavior based on time of year, day, and role types. With analytics, you can drill down into user activity, helping assess site capacity, traffic patterns, and feature utilization across specialties. These insights guide decision-making for workflows and journey mapping, aligning our efforts with actual user behavior.

Identifying UI Issues

Capturing user analytics also helps pinpoint potential issues within the UI. If users frequently click the help icon or search for specific topics, it may indicate confusion stemming from wording, visual layout, or other unrecognized issues. By tracking help guide usage and search queries, we can collaborate with product teams to enhance the user experience based on real user feedback.

Click Path Analysis

A significant advancement in analytic capabilities has been the ability to analyze click paths and user navigation through the software. By setting up "happy paths" or tracking key events, we can observe how users complete tasks. This allows us to compare completion rates, time on task, and the number of clicks taken to reach the optimal path, providing opportunities for efficiency improvements.
